Ashcombe Primary School is a thriving urban school with 630 pupils currently on roll, arranged in twenty one classes. Our pupils come from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds. Currently 28% are eligible for pupil premium. We have approx 12.5% of pupils from non-White UK families. All of our seven year groups are currently full and we are a popular and over-subscribed school. There is a waiting list of families keen to place their children in the school and once again we were heavily over-subscribed for our bulk intake into the foundation stage for September 2019.

The school site is very spacious with excellent grounds. The main school building is newly built and opened in July 2013 comprising 12 spacious classrooms for Years 1 to 4, a library, a room used by breakfast & after-school club as well as large open learning spaces directly outside each classroom. Two other “permanent” blocks built in the early 1970's house classroom for pupils in Years 5 & 6 as well as our spacious ICT suite, small music room and Gymnastics hall. In addition to this there is a purpose-built Children's Centre on site providing three school classrooms for our Foundation Stage classes alongside a large nursery and home-base for Springboard.

We aim to educate and care for the whole child in line with our mission statement of “Achieve to Grow”. Successes are celebrated and any setbacks are seen as opportunities to learn (for staff and children). Our children come to us from a very diverse range of family situations. We aim to “Nurture, Value and Motivate” every one of them, often personalising school experiences for those with additional needs.

A new head teacher was appointed in 2017 and since then the school has been re-thinking and re-shaping its entire approach. We've implemented an effective behaviour management approach that focuses on strong relationships and are re-designing our curriculum using the REAL Projects principles and approach (more here: http://www.real-projects.org/). We're also currently looking at the content of our curriculum in order to ensure our children leave us having acquired key ‘cultural capital' that will allow them to achieve as highly as possible.

We're also very interested in understanding how we can maximise the effectiveness of our teaching through an understanding of cognitive load theory and evidence based practice such as Barak Rosenshine's ‘Principle of Instruction'.

The school is developing very rapidly. There is a strong atmosphere of teamwork amongst all staff and governors. Teachers of all age groups plan collaboratively across the parallel classes. Parents are very supportive but some need encouraging to become more involved in their child's education. Our latest successful OFSTED inspection was during January 2013, when we were rated as good overall.

We work with six other local schools that together create the Kaleidoscope Multi Academy Trust. We work closely with our partner schools in a supportive and cooperative family.
