Woodfield Academy is a very successful and popular 5-form entry middle school with a PAN of 600 pupils, aged 9-13 years. We are a happy, vibrant learning community, with high aspirations for the children in our care and the staff team that supports them. We have strong links to the community, other schools and in particular, our wider pyramid, or ‘family of schools’.

The responsibility of the Cover Supervisor is to supervise whole classes in the absence of the class teacher, ensuring that pupils behave well and engage in the learning activity. Cover Supervisors will give instructions for a lesson as provided by a teacher. The post holder will be required to respond to pupils’ general questions and provide feedback to the teacher on broad issues such as behaviour but will not be expected to undertake any planning, preparation, delivery or assessment of pupils’ progress and/or development.


  • To be responsible for the organisation, development and administration of the cover ‘buddy’ system that is to be implemented across the academy
  • To be a point of contact for absent teachers
  • To receive cover work from absent teachers and collate and allocate this to appropriate personnel and/or classrooms, ensuring the organisation of cover for absent colleagues (teachers or support staff), for both planned and unplanned absences
  • In the absence of a teacher, to be solely responsible for a class of pupils, ensuring they are engaged in learning activity that has been set by a teacher
  • To effectively manage instances of poor behaviour and any other immediate issues or emergencies that arise in accordance with academy policy
  • To support students to engage with the work provided, including providing support where necessary with literacy, numeracy and organisational skills.
  • To liaise with teachers / other relevant staff with regard to work set for a class and ensure you are suitably equipped and informed to be able to effectively supervise the assigned lesson
  • To feedback to the class teacher on pupil engagement in the set work and also on any issues that may have arisen during the covered lesson(s)
  • To help prepare, monitor and maintain a safe and secure learning environment in line with the teacher’s lesson plans
  • To support the maintenance of an activity bank, contributing general activities as appropriate, and draw upon this in the event that pupils complete the preset work more quickly than expected, in order to ensure that pupils are engaged in constructive activity
  • To assist in the evaluation of the impact of covered lessons on pupils and throughout the academy
  • To undertake pupil registration of a class, as required
  • To promote positive behaviour and relationships, using effective strategies in a timely manner in accordance with academy policy
  • To develop positive relationships with colleagues, providing consistent and effective support and work constructively as a member of the academy staff team
  • To assist in the creation and maintenance of curriculum resources, and creation of visual displays in order to ensure a relevant physical learning environment
  • To undertake administrative duties relevant to the role
  • To invigilate internal and external tests and examinations under formal conditions
  • When not required to undertake any responsibility falling within the above, Cover Supervisors may be directed to provide additional support in the school, in accordance with the duties of other similarly or lower graded jobs for which they are suitably skilled/ qualified


  • To maintain a thorough and up to date knowledge and understanding of current educational issues and of the academy’s curriculum and policies
  • To participate in INSET provided by the academy and where appropriate to lead INSET on pupil welfare issues
  • To set realistic, measurable and achievable personal targets as part of appraisal in consultation with the Headteacher
  • To look for external INSET opportunities that further professional development and fulfil the training targets agreed during appraisal and to keep records of INSET attended
